Made from one of the hardest minerals in existence, quartz countertops are one of the most durable countertop and surface options. Quartz surfaces are available in a wide variety of colors and treatments that mimic the look of granite or marble. Unlike natural stone slabs that are mined, quartz slabs are engineered in a factory where ground quartz is combined with polyester resins to bind it and pigments to give it color. Recycled glass or metallic flecks may be added to create certain finishes. The resinbinders help make these counters stain and scratch resistant—and nonporous, so they never need to be sealed.
